Please study the evacuation route in case of emergency

In my last period of paid employment – “last” in the sense of “most recent”, but also possibly meaning “final” – I frequently stayed in high-end hotels whilst travelling for business. There was always a small map on the back of the room door, showing the evacuation route to be taken in the event of a fire or other emergency. Of course, I rarely looked – I didn’t really ever imagine there would be any need and, if there was, I would be able to work out how to reach safety.

Well, the time has come. Not just for me, but for all of us in the global West, because we are in a high Tower and it is falling. Gwyn ap Nudd has provided no map and no evacuation route: each of us will have to find our own way to safety.

Casting the Coelbren for 2022

As today is the first day of the year, I decided to follow John Beckett’s example, and conduct a divination for 2022 using the question “What does the new year hold for me and mine?”. As he says, the closer you are to me, the more this will apply to you and, since you are reading this, there is at least a weak connection.

I conducted the divination using the Coelbren of the Bards; specifically, using the Council of the Voices.

Celtic thinking, and the practices of Bards and Druids, are based on threes. This also applies to the system of divination using the Coelbren y Beirdd.

Iolo Morganwg, Druidry and suffering

As recent posts have suggested, I’ve been thinking about the topic of suffering – and how Druidry deals with suffering. It’s something we all need to be thinking about, to be honest. We’re entering a time of major change. We’ve known for decades that climate change, resource depletion, and debt posed catastrophic threats to our way of life, and we have completely failed to prepare. Life is already hard for too many people; the unpalatable truth is that it will soon get much worse.

Druids and resilience

The photo shows two letters from the Coelbren y Beirdd alphabet: ‘d’, and ‘dd’. The first is pronounced in the same way as in English; the second is pronounced like the English ‘th’ in ‘this’, ‘that’, or ‘there’.

Harvard PredictionX: a course on divination

For several months now, I have gotten into the habit practising divination by using two systems in parallel: the I Ching, and the Welsh Coelbren y Beirdd.

Druidry in a time of pestilence

During the past few weeks of confinement, I’ve been engaging in quite a lot of divination, using both the I Ching and the Coelbren y Beirdd. I’ve been receiving a number of repeating patterns in the answers. Wait. Do not act now. The time is not right. This is a time of danger, of stasis; a time when one cycle has come to an end but the next cycle is not yet ready to commence. This is a time to rexamine, and re-commit to, one’s values.

Much of this relates to my personal situation, and the course of my own life. However, as the days pass, and the news gets grimmer, I understand that it applies to all of us, and to the society we have been living in.

Casting the Coelbren: The Council of Voices

This method of divination uses six letters. It’s the one that I find myself using the most.

The Council of Voices draws its inspiration from the I Ching, which I have used for many years.

Casting the Coelbren: the Awen

When seeking a model for divination using the Coelbren, it is natural to turn to the Awen: the three rays of knowledge introduced to us by Iolo Morganwg, and the symbol of Druids ever since.

Casting the Coelbren: A single sound

Of the four methods I have been using to read the Coelbren, this is the simplest.

Write down your question. Be still and calm until the question is clear in your mind. Shake the bag in which you keep your Coelbren. Draw out one tile. Note it down under the question. Look up the meaning of the tile, and contemplate its application to your question.
